SOCCER
WEST PINES U13 TEAM WINS WESTON TOURNEY
The West Pines United under-13 girls' travel soccer team won the Weston Cup Tournament in the Premier Division.
They were first of five teams. Each team played each other once, and the winner was determined by a point system.
West Pines opened with a 2-1 win over host Weston Premier. Melanie Monteagudo scored the tying and winning goals. West Pines battled the Sunrise Sting to a scoreless tie.
West Pines defeated Royal Palm Beach 2-0 on goals by Inbar Cohen and Cidney Moscovitch. West Pines secured the title with a 2-0 victory over Tropical Soccer. Mya Goodman and Monteagudo scored.
West Pines has also won the West Pines Kickoff Classic, US Club Soccer Florida Cup and the FLUGSA/FSL State Southern Division with a 12-0-3 record.
The team prepares for the Florida State Cup and Super Y-League.
The talented team consists of Mya Goodman, Cidney Moscovitch, Alessandra Salazar, Bridget Callahan, Inbar Cohen, Carissa Sanchez, Natalia Chavarria, Melanie Lane, Sharmenie Esin, Tabatha Gonzalez, Jennifer Ocampo, Melanie Monteagudo, Ariana Fontenot and Alexandra Fernandez. The head coach is Todd Goodman and the assistant coach is Bobby Salazar.
LEAGUE'S SEASON ENDS
WITH SOCCERFEST
Cooper City Optimist recreational soccer concluded the season with its annual SoccerFest at the Cooper City Sports Complex.
More than 1,200 boys and girls participated in the league on more than 120 teams with more than 250 volunteer coaches. Championship games in each division were played throughout the day. Carnival games, rides, a DJ, food, beverages and team picnics made for an enjoyable event.
• After many years in the league, the Giancarlo brothers not only teamed for the first time in their history, but they helped lead Brazil over Germany 2-1 for the Senior boys' championship in Cooper City Optimist recreational soccer during SoccerFest at the Cooper City Sports Complex.
In his career finale of Optimist soccer, Jason Giancarlo scored in the first half, and younger brother Greg, picked a good time to score his first goal of the season, with the winner in the second half. The Giancarlos shared Game MVP honors.
Kyle Walker did a good job defensively and making runs from the back. Robbie Cohen played well, and Ryan Parker won his first championship in six tries.
For Germany, John Scottello scored off an assist from Michael Mellette.

• Ireland placed second in under-12 girls of the postseason tournament during Cooper City Optimist SoccerFest at the Cooper City Sports Complex.
In an exciting finals, Portugal edged Ireland 2-1 (4-3 in shootout). Ireland went ahead 1-0 in the first half on a goal by team game-ball recipient Denise Cukierman. Tied at one, neither team scored in overtime, setting up penalty kicks to determine the winner.
Kaela Moye, who was impressive on defense, also earned a game ball. Amber Aycock, Natalia Arias, Kirsten Bunting, Leiha Cardona, Taylor Crews, Emma Johnson, Melanie Gonzalez, Taylor Manfredi, Amanda Ryan, Laura Simpson, Ashley Tjin A Djie and Alexis Tolentino played well.
''The team was very impressive, and they have a lot of talent,'' Ireland coach Lee Gorodetsky said. ``It was a pleasure coaching them all season.''

TOPS SHOWPRO 4-3
Hunter Greggs scored the winner off an assist from Nico Dulcey as the Blue Fire edged Showpro 4-3 in under-10 boys' playoffs of Coral Springs Youth Soccer at Mullins Park.
Eddie Reyna had three goals. Sterling Howell did a good job in goal with solid defense from Ivan Axelson and Will Snider.
For Showpro, Alejandro Jaramillo scored three times. David Gutierrez had assists, and Billy Bargar played well.
• MORE PLAYOFFS: TEAM NO. 21/FIREHAWKS 1, TEAM NO. 7 0:Garrett Knobel scored the winner off an assist by Jared Weinberg. The Firehawks were 1-9-1 in the regular season with their lone win an upset over the first-place team.
• ANNIE'S PIZZA 5, TEAM NO. 19 0:Jose Rabadan scored four times, including one off a hooking corner kick. Kasey Laventure took a throw-in from Tommy Williams and beat two defenders and the keeper for a goal.
Williams (second quarter) also combined with Daniel Duran (third, fourth quarters) and Nick Defrocia (first quarter) on the shutout.
• U19: HEARTWORKS 6, CENTURY 21 TROPICAL SPRINGS 1:Andres Rios scored three times. Bryan Costa had two goals, and Ricky Abram added one. For Century 21, Chris Dresner scored.
• GIRLS: PLAYOFFS: U19: ETEAG SOLUTIONS 5, TAYLOR MADE CLOSETS 2:Kayla Grad had three goals. Alexandra Danovitch and Emily Singrossi also scored. For Taylor Made, Jessica Brickman had a goal, and Jessica Maxey scored on a 20-yard direct kick into the upper right corner.
• A.S.C. 3, PINK TEAM 0:Kaitlin Roubicek scored three times, and Nicole Murphy had an assist. Midfielder Megan Kowalchuk did a good job clearing the ball.
LACROSSE
DAVIE'S GADDY SHINES IN SEASON OPENER
The Davie Bantam Orange (kindergarten-second grade) lacrosse team opened the season against the Palm Beach Gardens Gators. Davie's Ethan Gaddy scored twice and moved the ball with skill.
Newcomers Erin Engel and Lauren Waldman did a good job at midfield, forcing turnovers. Connor Boland and Karl Waldman, two others new to the game, played enthusiastically, forcing the Gators away from the goal.

Weber played well on defense. Caroline was awarded the game ball for her play and sportsmanship.
• The Davie Bantam Orange defeated the Weston Warriors. Davie's Kyle Engel had four of five goals. Gaddy also scored to secure the win. Erin Engel, Karl Waldman and Boland caused many turnovers.
Newcomer Drew Chadrow played attack. Caroline DuBois-Weber and Kadin Schillo played well on defense. Lauren Waldman was awarded the game ball for play and sportsmanship.
• Weston beat the Davie Broncos Bantam Navy 4-0. Davie's Jayce Collins, Andrew Taranto and Kelly Dunne worked hard on defense. The midfield lines of Angelo Taranto, Matthew Akuchie, Shane Nieto and Spike Sanchez were solid on offense and defense. Flash Zvi, Jackie Stanish, Sam Brown and Gunner Martinez took several shots.
• THIRD- AND FOURTH-GRADERS: The Davie Bronco Orange Lightning won its opener, beating Palm Beach Gardens 16-0. Ryan Kenny, Sam Dorfman and Craig Barr each had three goals. Brady Kennerson added two goals.
Veteran players Ryan Reddington and Logan Wexler-Hill anchored the offense with solid play, and first-year players Filippo Vento and Mason Moyer also scored. Zach Ryan anchored a strong defense that allowed two shots on goal. Goalies Kyle Bannister and Kevin Glasheen combined on their first shutout.
• The Davie Orange Lightning won another, besting the Weston Warriors 4-0. Barr had two goals and an assist. Kyle Rarick had a goal and an assist. They received game balls.
Attack rookie Daniel Kline displayed solid passing and catching. Midfielders Dorfman (five ground balls) and Kenny (two ground balls, one shot) hustled. Wexler-Hill took three shots, and Greg Riordan had two. Midfielder Vento added a goal in the third quarter to seal the win.
Kory Schillo and Moyer were aggressive on defense along with Ryan who led the team in retrieved ground balls with six. Glasheen, who was solid at keeper, made excellent clearing passes. Bannister relieved Glasheen in the fourth quarter and kept the Warriors scoreless.
• The Davie Lightning Navy won its home opener against Weston 9-1. Chris Dunne finished with two goals and three assists. Dean Mastrodicasa had two goals and made three saves.
Dalton Koponen, who was strong in goal in the first quarter, had two goals and an assist. Kevin Matthews, Quinn Dempsey and Zane Viscasillas scored. Michael Akuchie and Rasmus Redman contributed assists. Logan Giordano also had assists along with overall strong play.
Alec Rodriguez, Matt Kirchmier, Max Stanish and Ethan Chiappelli fought hard on ground balls. Matthew Moses, Joc Melvin, Kolbe Adsungur, Nick Shepeard and Hunter Goode had strong defensive games holding a shutout until the last few minutes. Melvin also played well in goal. Kolbe was awarded the game ball for his defensive and ground ball tenacity.
• Palm Beach Gardens beat the Davie Lightning Navy. Davie's Koponen played well in goal, registering five saves in the first half. Dunne had two unassisted goals in the second half.
Mastrodicasa, Redman and Chiappelli worked hard on the attack. Kyle Keyser, Matthews and Kirchmier played well at midfield. Game-ball recipient Melvin, Moses and Goode played admirably on defense.
• FIFTH- AND SIXTH- GRADERS: The Palm Beach Gators defeated the Davie Bronco Juniors Navy 8-1 in the opener. After allowing five early goals in the first quarter, Davie goalie Max Brown and the defense made several adjustments and played tough the rest of the game.
Jack Weinsier, who excelled in goal in the second half, scored. Conor Carriero and David Tescher played hard at midfield. Zack Battaglia showed great promise at midfield in his debut. Brown received the game ball.
• The Weston Warriors beat the Davie Broncos Junior Orange 8-2. Davie's Daniel Nerenhausen, Keaton Vannatta, C.J. Gallante and Joey O'Neill displayed solid play.
Mason Kohn and Steven Rogriguez made several saves and completed several excellent clearing passes. Rhett Gonzalez and Ty Espada-Murtha scored. Noah Dearman had five ground balls, and Max Kreisler who did well on the faceoffs.
• SEVENTH- AND EIGHTH-GRADERS: The Palm Beach Gators defeated the Davie Broncos Orange Senior 11-4. Davie goalie Charlie Moll kept the game close through the second quarter.
Matt Glasheen, Justin Chang and Richard Rosario also helped on defense. Ryan Horland played defensive midfield and had a few over the head checks. R.J. Curtin, Will Hart and Logan Jankowski scored in each of the first three games. Thomas Tufano and R.J. Palhegyi each added an assist. Drew Nolan and Ben Pflum made a few successful clears.
• SENIORS: The Weston Warriors beat the Davie Senior Orange 8-1. Moll kept Davie in the game. Curtin scored. Jankowski and Palhegyi led the team in ground balls. On defense, Glasheen and Dirroco shut down the attackmen.
• The Davie Broncos Senior Navy had a tough battle against Palm Beach Gardens. Stifling defense by Joey Dorn, Michael Gardner, Chuck O'Connell and Chris Nuñez, along with stellar goal play from Robert Saller, kept the Broncos in the game, trailing 1-0 at halftime.
Michale Ferguson, Jesse Cortes and Bruno Mastrodicasa worked hard at midfield with Ferguson scoring twice. David Butz, Kristo Sterghos and Zach Levy helped control the ball. Dorn received a game ball for tenacious defense.
• Weston defeated the Davie Broncos Senior Navy 6-1 in the opener. Dorn, Gardner and Saller excelled on defense, and Ferguson scored.
• JUNIORS: The Weston Warriors beat the Davie Broncos Junior Navy. Davie returning defenseman Evan Schimek along with first-year defensive starters Jack Ehlers and Jeremy Eglinger stood firm in the first quarter. Eric Paul, Jack Weinsier and David Tescher played well at midfield. Max Brown and Weinsier shared the responsibilities in goal.
ROLLER HOCKEY
SILVER TRAIL MIDDLE TOPS TEQUESTA TRACE
Austin Gomez had three goals and an assist as Silver Trail defeated Tequesta Trace 5-3 in the Middle School Division of the South Florida Inline Hockey League at Weston Regional Park.
Dylan Brokman and Kai Kapossy also scored, and Jennifer Wisnieski had an assist. Hunter Delporter and Jordan Vileseca made several key saves to seal the win. For Tequesta Trace, Brandon Palacio scored twice, and Casy Greenberg added a goal. Jack Bernstein and Rebecca Parker each had an assist.
Tequesta Trace scored twice early in the third period to even things at three, before Silver Trail answered with two more goals. Randy Schmidt had a tremendous game in goal for Tequesta Trace.
• SEMINOLE PANTHERS 9, MIAMI-BELEN PREP 9:Cody Cigalotti had six goals and one assist for Seminole. Conner Smith added a goal and two assists, and Ryan Crosier and Steven Gainsburg each had a goal and an assist.
Matt Golmulka, Nicholas Fonseca, James Puller and Shane O'Donnell worked hard on defense. Cosmo DiCicco played admirably in goal.
For Belen, Jesse Sardina had four goals and an assist. Michael Aguad totaled three goals and an assist. Matthew Diaz and Michael Tefel also scored.
• INDIAN JAGUARS 4, FALCON COVE GOLD 0:Justin Sibole scored and had an assist.
Tommy King, Dax Leiter and Andrew Tweeton each added a goal. Ryan Lazarus played well, and goalie Eddie Calderin recorded the shutout. Nick Amato, Kyle Bechtold and Jordan Rubin worked hard for Falcon Cove.
• FALCON COVE BLUE 11, THE JAGUARS 0:Eduardo Leon recorded seven goals and two assists. Chance Wolf had two goals and two assists. Harrison Brandes and Zach Sugerman each had a goal and two assists. Jake Levine also had an assist. Mike Tomlinson recorded the shutout.
• FALCON COVE BLACK 9, RIDGE JAGUARS 1:Garrett Lovoy scored his first goal of the season. Ben Torruella totaled three goals and one assist.
Thomas Yamashita scored twice with two assists. Danny Lopez had a goal and two assists. Alex Kaplan and Anthony Marino scored, and Matt Stief had an assist.
For the Jaguars, Jake Pistiner scored off an assist from Logan Jankowski.

MARLINS TOP YANKEES IN SEASON OPENER
The Marlins opened the Weston Area Little League Majors season with an exciting 7-6 win over the Yankees. Starter Tyler Vina pitched well. Third baseman Michael Gillman had a double, a triple and three RBI, and center fielder Chris Malahias made a diving catch.
MARINERS OUTSCORE
THE RED SOX, 3-1
The Mariners opened the season with a 3-1 win over the Red Sox in Atom of Davie Little League baseball.
Kyle Benson pitched three shutout innings and had two RBI. Michael Notman was strong in relief, allowing just one run.
Gene Bryan led off the game with a single and scored the first run. Connor Benson, catching his first full game, followed with a single and also scored. Josh Benbasat had an RBI. Jalen Perez and Dylan Kautzmann reached base on walks.
Tommy Bryan connected well in two at bats. Aaron Dsouza and Kyle Weintraub were strong in the field. In his Little League debut, Michael Fox took solid swings and was active in the outfield.
GYMNASTICS
PROGRAMS AT YMCA ATTRACT HUNDREDS
Irina Vershinin, the gymnastics director, has spent more than 15 years helping develop kids into good, young people at the South Broward Family YMCA.
More than 400 youths, 18-months-old to 17, participate in gymanstics' programs offered at the Y. More than 50 are boys.
Beginning and training classes are Monday-Saturday. Beginners and recreational participants can go once a week. Competitive team members train three to five days weekly.
Vershinin is proud of the students and her eight instructors (four coaches). Two of her instructors, Heather Campbell and Melanie Lerch, are former Y gymnastics team members. Quincy O'Brien spent nine years in the program, competing at various levels. Now she is a gymnastics instructor and a summer camp gymnastics counselor at the Y.
The gymnastics team features 50 gymnasts, Levels 4-9. The greater the number the tougher the skill level. They compete in USA Gymnastics meets and YMCA Nationals. At last year's state championships, the Level 3 team won, and the Level 4 group placed third.
A two-time state champ (Level 6 and 7), Michael Dorsey now competes in Level 8 boys. Placing second on high bars, he helped Team Florida win regionals in 2008.
Last year at state, Halie Barrios was first on beam, floor and all-around in Level 3 age 8. Madi-Leigh Brown was first on beam in Level 3 age 7. Makenzi Brown was first on bars and all-around in Level 3 age 7. Cassandra Cattesson was fifth all-around in Level 3 age 8. Kristen Hauser was the Level 4 age 9 state champ on bars. Jasmine Maslanova was the Level 4 age 12 state champ on bars. Kaitlyn Ortiz was the Level 4 age 8 state champ on vault. Marilena Pappas was first on floor and all-around in Level 3 age 9. Sophia Rosenecker was first on floor and second all-around in Level 3 age 7. Natalie Soto was the Level 6 age 9 state champ on beam. BASKETBALL
HALLANDALE BEACH BOY A NATIONAL FINALIST
Keyshawn Evans, 12, of Hallandale Beach, was one of 25 finalists for the 2009 Jr. NBA national team.
Each year, the Jr. NBA national team is selected with five boys from nearly 1,000 nominations. Evans participates in 1 on 1 Basketball Academy's Player Development League in Miramar and Miami Beach.
The 1 on 1 Basketball Academy has produced seven national team finalists (top 15-25 players in the country), a boy and girl each year since obtaining membership in the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA.
Evans is a sixth-grader at Lauderdale Lakes Middle School.
