Whichever way you decide on saying it, Setanta Sports seems to be here to stay for the next few years at least. They own the rights to many exciting Premier League matches and are the only real competitor to Sky Sports.
The thing with Setanta Sports is that everyone seems to hate them, yet I don’t really understand why. No-one seems to have a problem with Sky Sports, who until recently would have the exclusive rights to nearly every Premier League match available. And then they even had their own pay-per-view channel on top of this, for even more football games, and still no-one seemed to bat an eyelid.
However when Setanta came in and started buying up Premier League games to display on their own digital sports subscription channel, everyone seemed to go a bit mad. Perhaps it was because they are Irish, or perhaps it was because they don’t have the best customer-support service. Anyway, it seemed to me that people jumped on the ‘I Hate Setanta’ bandwagon simply because they felt like they were being ripped off.
I can understand some of the dislike for Setanta, but I don’t really see why so many people were against paying to subscribe to their channel. Competition to Sky Sports stranglehold on the Premier League matches should be seen as a good thing - perhaps they will both try and lower their prices to out compete each other? I think its fair to say that Sky Sports were becoming a bit of a monopoly, and now perhaps we will start to see other sports channels trying to get in on some of the lucrative footballing TV deals. We’ve heard recently that channel ESPN were considering bidding on some of the Premier League matches.
However a few days back it was announced that the BSkyB group had won the £1.62 billion fight to display the majority of the Premier League matches from 2010 to 2013 - beating the likes of Setanta Sports and ESPN. Setanta Sports will be displaying around 23 games, which is half its current offering.
Whatever happens, Setanta Sports is well worth subscribing to at least for the next few years. For £10.99 a month you get around 4 matches a month (they show 46 Barclays Premier League matches per season), some of the England Internationals (which won’t be available on other channels), every round of the FA Cup including the FA Cup final, boxing and many other sports too.
